Hojo-Undo
Supplementary training - traditional conditioning exercises and equipment work to develop strength and power.
Other Requirements
Additional elements such as bunkai (applications), coaching qualifications, and theoretical knowledge at senior grades.

Technical Panel
Dan examinations are conducted by GKI's Technical Panel consisting of senior dan grades. Higher dan grades require examination by increasingly senior examiners.
Age Requirements
Minimum ages apply for dan grades. See the Grading System page for full details on age requirements and examination fees.
Preparing for Your Grading
What to Expect
Grading examinations test your knowledge of current grade requirements PLUS revision of all previous material. You will be assessed on:
- Technical accuracy and proper form
- Power and speed in execution
- Understanding of applications (bunkai)
- Spirit and attitude (fighting spirit/kime)
- Consistency across all techniques
Training Tips
Minimum 18 training sessions between gradings. Consistent attendance is more important than cramming before the exam.
Review this page regularly so you know exactly what's required for your next grade. Ask your instructor if anything is unclear.
Supplement dojo training with home practice of kata, basic techniques, and conditioning exercises.
Practice kumite and bunkai with training partners outside of class time when possible.
Perfect execution of basics is more important than learning advanced techniques. Master your current grade thoroughly.
Gradings can be nerve-wracking. Practice visualizing successful performance and focus on doing your best.
