The GKI syllabus outlines the technical requirements for each grade from beginner to 6th Dan. This comprehensive curriculum ensures consistent standards across all GKI clubs worldwide.

Understanding the Syllabus

The GKI syllabus is structured to develop students progressively through the fundamental aspects of Goju-Ryu Karate. Each grade builds upon the previous one, ensuring a solid foundation before advancing to more complex techniques.

Syllabus Components

Kihon Waza

Basic techniques - fundamental strikes, blocks, kicks, and stances that form the foundation of all karate movements.

Kata

Formal exercises - pre-arranged sequences of techniques that develop technique, power, and understanding of applications.

Kumite

Partner practice - from basic prearranged sparring to free fighting, developing timing, distance, and application skills.

Hojo-Undo

Supplementary training - traditional conditioning exercises and equipment work to develop strength and power.

Other Requirements

Additional elements such as bunkai (applications), coaching qualifications, and theoretical knowledge at senior grades.

Dan Grade Syllabus (Black Belts)

1st Dan (Shodan) through 6th Dan

Dan grade examinations assess technical excellence, deep understanding of kata applications, teaching ability, and contribution to the organization. Requirements build upon all previous grades plus specific new elements for each dan level.

Dan Grade Notes

Time in Grade

Minimum time between dan grades increases with each level: 2 years (1st-2nd), 3 years (2nd-3rd), 4 years (3rd-4th), continuing to increase for higher grades.

Technical Panel

Dan examinations are conducted by GKI's Technical Panel consisting of senior dan grades. Higher dan grades require examination by increasingly senior examiners.

Preparing for Your Grading

What to Expect

Grading examinations test your knowledge of current grade requirements PLUS revision of all previous material. You will be assessed on:

  • Technical accuracy and proper form
  • Power and speed in execution
  • Understanding of applications (bunkai)
  • Spirit and attitude (fighting spirit/kime)
  • Consistency across all techniques

Training Tips

📅 Attend Regularly:

Minimum 18 training sessions between gradings. Consistent attendance is more important than cramming before the exam.

Review this page regularly so you know exactly what's required for your next grade. Ask your instructor if anything is unclear.

💪 Practice at Home:

Supplement dojo training with home practice of kata, basic techniques, and conditioning exercises.

🤝 Train with Partners:

Practice kumite and bunkai with training partners outside of class time when possible.

🎯 Focus on Quality:

Perfect execution of basics is more important than learning advanced techniques. Master your current grade thoroughly.

🧘 Mental Preparation:

Gradings can be nerve-wracking. Practice visualizing successful performance and focus on doing your best.

On Grading Day

  • Arrive early - at least 15 minutes before the exam starts
  • Ensure your gi is clean and in good condition
  • Bring your GKI license card
  • Warm up thoroughly before the grading begins
  • Listen carefully to examiner instructions
  • Perform every technique with full effort and spirit
  • Stay focused - don't worry about mistakes, keep going
  • Respect the examiners and show proper etiquette

Your instructor will not put you forward for grading unless they believe you are ready. Trust in your training, do your best, and show the spirit of Goju-Ryu. Osu!
