Getting Started with GKI
Find a Club Near You
Locate a GKI club in your area. Each club has experienced instructors ready to welcome new students of all ages and abilities.
Find a Club โVisit for a Trial Session
Most clubs offer trial sessions so you can experience training before committing. Contact your local club to arrange a visit - no prior experience needed!
Join Your Club
Once you're ready to start, your club instructor will guide you through membership and help you get your training gear (gi and belt).
Get Your GKI License
After a few weeks of training, you'll need a GKI license for insurance and grading purposes. Your instructor will help you apply.
License Information โWhat to Expect in Your First Class
What to Wear: Comfortable workout clothes for your first few sessions. You'll get your gi (uniform) once you join.
Friendly Welcome: You'll be introduced to the instructor and other students. Everyone started as a beginner!
Basic Training: Warm-up exercises, basic stances, punches, and blocks. Training is adapted to your fitness level.
Learning Etiquette: You'll learn dojo customs like bowing and how to address instructors respectfully.

โGKI England Licensing
All GKI England members require a current license to train and grade. Your license provides insurance coverage and supports the organization's operations.

โ ๏ธ Important: You must have a current license before taking any grading examination. Licenses cannot be backdated.
License Fees (2026)
License Book: First-time applicants need to purchase a GKI license book (ยฃ5 one-time fee) along with their first license. This book records your grading history.
How to Apply
License applications are processed through our member portal, DojoConnect. Your club instructor can help you with your first application.
Grading and Progress
Regular grading examinations allow you to progress through the kyu (colored belt) and dan (black belt) ranks. Gradings test your technical knowledge, fitness, and understanding of Goju-Ryu principles.
Grading Frequency
Most students grade approximately 4 times per year (every 12-13 weeks) up to purple belt, with longer intervals required for higher grades.
Recommended: At least 18 training sessions between gradings.

Belt Structure
Kyu Grades (Colored Belts):
9th Kyu (White) โ 8th โ 7th โ 6th โ 5th โ 4th โ 3rd โ 2nd โ 1st Kyu (Brown)
Children may have intermediate "mon" grades with contrasting stripes
