What to Expect When You Visit a Club
Never trained before? Here's what typically happens when you visit a GKI club for the first time:
Before Your Visit
Contact the club to arrange a visit. Most clubs welcome visitors to watch a class or participate in a trial session. Let them know you're new to karate.
Arrival
Arrive 10-15 minutes early. The instructor will greet you, show you around, and explain how the session works. No special clothing needed for watching - comfortable sportswear if participating.
Watch or Try
You can watch the class to get a feel for the training, or many clubs offer a free trial lesson. Don't worry about not knowing what to do - everyone starts as a beginner!
After Class
Chat with the instructor about training times, costs, and how to get started. Ask any questions you have - instructors love talking about karate!
Getting Started
If you decide to join, you'll need to register with the club and obtain a GKI license. Your instructor will guide you through the process and help you get your first gi (uniform).
Remember
Every GKI club maintains a welcoming, supportive environment. Instructors and senior students are there to help you learn. Don't be nervous - everyone in the dojo was once a beginner just like you!
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need experience to join?
No! Most members start with zero martial arts experience. Our instructors are trained to teach complete beginners.
What age groups do you teach?
GKI clubs typically teach children from age 5+ and adults of all ages. Some clubs have specific junior and senior classes. Contact your local club for their age groups.
How much does it cost?
Costs vary by club and location. Most clubs charge monthly membership fees. Contact your local club for specific pricing. You'll also need a GKI license (£21/year for adults) and a gi (uniform), typically £30-40.
How often should I train?
Most beginners train 1-2 times per week. As you progress, you may want to train more frequently. Consistent attendance is more important than training frequency.
What should I wear to my first class?
For your first visit, wear comfortable sportswear - t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms or shorts. Train barefoot. Once you join, you'll purchase a gi (karate uniform).
Is it good for fitness?
Absolutely! Karate training provides excellent cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility, and coordination. You'll get fit while learning practical self-defense skills.
